New Delhi: Telecom regulator Trai on Thursday issued directions to telecom service providers to curb the practice of telemarketing companies sending repeated harassing and unauthorized messages to mobile phone users.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has asked telecom service providers to take immediate steps to prevent misuse of headers and message formats by telemarketers. For this, they have been asked to re-verify all registered headers and message templates on the ‘Distributed Ledger Technology’ (DLT) platform.

Along with this, TRAI has said that all headers and message templates that have not been verified will have to be banned within 30 and 60 days respectively. Telecom companies have also been asked to ensure that the temporary header is disabled immediately after expiry.

TRAI said, โ€œWork to prevent misuse by removing confusion among the recipients of the message. Access Providers shall not register any similar headers in the name of different entitiesโ€, Telecom companies have been asked to stop sending messages from unauthorized and unregistered telemarketers. Ban telemarketing entities not registered on the DLT platform.

Telecom companies will also have to ensure that promotional messages are not sent from unregistered telemarketers or telemarketers using 10 digit phone numbers.

Telecom companies have also been asked to take action against telemarketing agencies that do not comply with these directions. Along with this, instructions have also been given to take legal action against them for violation of relevant laws. TRAI has asked all telecom service providers to comply with these instructions within 30 days.
