The number of guests who visited the Netherlands last year increased by 40 per cent, to a total of 44 million.

It shows that figures are roughly at the level before the spread of the Coronavirus and its new variants, according to the recent report provided by Statistics Netherlands (CBS), SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The same noted that travellers at the Netherlands accommodations last year spent a total of 127.8 million nights, thus accounting for a year-on-year surge of 26 per cent as well as four per cent more compared to 2019 figures, before the spread of COVID-19.

A total of 28 million tourists stayed overnight in hotels in the Netherlands last year, or a 60 per cent increase compared to 2021 figures, however still below pre-pandemic levels.

At the same time, holiday parks saw a total of 10 million guests and campsites about 3 million, or a year-on-year increase of 11 and 13 per cent more specifically. The recent figures show that in this regard there was marked a significant surge, surpassing even pre-pandemic levels.

As for group accommodations, they registered 1.5 million guest arrivals last year, or 66 per cent more compared to 2021 figures.

The number of foreign tourists also rose last year by 150 per cent year on year, to a total of 16 million, but still below compared to pre-pandemic levels.

โ€œHotels and group accommodations not only received more foreign guests last year but also more domestic guests. Campsites and holiday parks, on the other hand, reported a decline in foreign guest arrivals. Nevertheless, these accommodations still attracted more domestic guests than before the coronavirus crisis,โ€ the statement reads.

In addition, it was reported that the number of guests staying in overnight accommodations last year was higher in all provinces.

The most notable increase was experienced in Noord-Holland, while the lowest was registered in Zeeland.

โ€œAlso relative to 2019, most provinces received more overnight visitors. A lower number was seen mainly in Noord-Holland and Groningen, compared to the last pre-pandemic year,โ€ the statement revealed.

Authorities in the Netherlands last year saw a surge in the number of foreign arrivals, thus helping the travel and tourism sector to recover from the difficult situation caused by COVID-related restrictions.

Statistic Netherlands (CBS) earlier this year revealed that a total of 61.3 million air passengers travelled to and from the main five airports in the Netherlands, or more than double the figures registered in 2021, still a quarter less than in 2019.
