Croatia Registered 229,000 Tourist Arrivals & 602,000 Overnight Stays in January 2023

The Croatian Bureau of Statistics has revealed that in January of this year, Croatiaโ€™s accommodation establishments recorded 229,000 tourist arrivals and 602,000 tourist nights, representing an increase in arrivals by 32.4 per cent and nights by 19.1 per cent compared to January of 2022.

Data show that during this period, domestic tourists represented 114,000 arrivals and spent 253,000 nights, which is an increase of 15.0 per cent in tourist arrivals and 3.2 per cent in tourist nights compared to January of last year, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

A slightly higher number of arrivals and overnight stays was registered by foreign tourists in January 2023. According to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, the country registered 114,000 foreign tourist arrivals and 253,000 nights in January 2023, marking a 55.9 per cent increase in arrivals and 34.1 per cent more tourist nights than in January 2022.

The foreign tourists who spent the most tourist nights were Slovenians (with 51,000 nights). They accounted for 14.5 per cent of the total number of foreign tourist nights spent in Croatia in the first month of this year.

Compared to January of the last year, tourists from Slovenia spent 65.2 per cent more nights. They spent the most nights in the Istria Country(48.4 per cent) and Primorje-Gorski Kotar County (16.5 per cent).

Slovenian visitors were followed by those from Germany who spent 10.4 per cent of nights, Austria with 10.2 per cent, Italy with 9.6 per cent and Bosnia and Herzegovina with 7.0 per cent.

Zagreb Recorded the Most Tourist Nights in January 2023

During January 2023, the capital of Croatia, Zagreb, recorded the most tourist nights with a total of 128,000, which was 21.2 per cent of the total number of tourist nights realised in Croatia.

Compared to the same month of 2022, there were 22.2 per cent more tourist nights in the city of Zagreb in January 2023. Zagreb is followed by the County of Istria with 123,000 tourist nights and the County of Primorje-Gorski Kotar with 98,000 nights.

Regarding the total number of tourist nights spent in the city of Zagreb, it has been noted that local tourists spent 29.1 per cent and foreign tourists spent 70.9 per cent of the nights in January 2023.

Italian tourists accounted for the largest number of foreign tourist nights in this city, with 11.7 per cent. They were followed by Germans (7.9 per cent), Bosnians (6.8 per cent), Americans (5.7 per cent), and Serbs (5.2 per cent).

Further statistics reveal that in January of this year, 357,000 nights were spent in hotels and similar accommodation establishments, constituting 59.3 per cent of the total tourist nights.

Compared to the same period last year, there were 26.4 per cent more tourist nights spent in hotels and similar accommodation establishments.

Meanwhile, short-term accommodation establishments registered a lower number of nights spent by domestic and foreign tourists. Short-term accommodation registered about 218,000 nights, representing 36.3 per cent of the total realised tourist nights. Moreover, this type of accommodation has achieved an increase in tourist nights of 11.3 per cent compared to January 2022.

Tourists coming to Croatia in January 2023 had at their disposal 65,000 rooms, apartments and campsites with 148,000 permanent beds. During this period, tourists between the ages of 35 and 44 spent the largest number of nights (123,000).

They were followed by tourists aged 25-34, who recorded 109,000 nights, comprising 18.0 per cent of total nights spent.
