Mumbai. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Dnyaneshwar Mhatre was declared victorious from the Konkan Mandal Teachers’ constituency in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections on Thursday. The BJP-backed candidate was defeated by the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in the Nagpur Mandal Teachers seat. Officials gave this information. He said MVA-backed candidate Sudhakar Adabale won from Nagpur teachers’ constituency by defeating his nearest rival Nagorao Ganar. BJP-backed independent candidate Ganar is the sitting MLC from this seat.

Nagpur is the home district of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. The counting of votes is underway for three other seats Aurangabad, Mandal Shikshak Constituency, Amravati and Nashik Mandal Graduate Constituency. Voting for all the five seats in the Upper House of the Legislature took place on January 30 and the counting of votes began on Thursday morning.

Mhatre, the BJP candidate, was supported by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led party Balasahebchi Shiv Sena, who defeated MVA-backed candidate Balram Patil in the Konkan seat. Mhatre got 20,683 votes, while Patil got 10,997 votes, said Mahendra Kalyankar, the returning officer and divisional commissioner who announced the results for the Konkan teachers constituency.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Vikram Kale is leading after the first round of counting in Aurangabad Teachers’ constituency. The six-year term of five council members (three from teachers’ constituencies and two from graduates’ constituencies) ends on February 7.
