Flood situation has become once again in Punjab. Both the country’s second largest Bhakra Dam on the Sutlej River and the Pong Dam on the Beas River have reached the danger mark. Yesterday, after nearly 35 years, the flood gates of Bhakra were opened more than 10 feet, which were closed late at night. Along with this, water is being continuously released from Pong Dam.

Flood-like conditions have started to form in Punjab once again. Dhusi Dam has broken near Chakmirpur in Hoshiarpur due to rising water level of Beas. Several villages along the Beas river in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district and Sutlej river in Rupnagar have been submerged in water.

Along with this, Minister Harjot Bains himself reached the flood affected villages. Minister Bains, who reached the village Bela Dhiani, said that the water level in the villages has started coming down at night. The help of NDRF, Army and Air Force is being sought to control the situation.

In a tweet, he said that all the people trapped in Harsa Bela and Patti Dulchi villages of Anandpur Sahib have been rescued safely.

Bains, while giving information about the floods, said that the water level is decreasing in the villages of Sri Anandpur Sahib constituency. He has asked to avoid any false rumour. Bains said that the flood water in the villages will decrease further in the near future. He said that meanwhile the people who are trapped due to flood are in constant contact with the government.

Late in the night, NDRF teams tried to evacuate people trapped in the floods, Bains said. But it was not possible due to the darkness. Today NDRF will try to evict them again.

According to the information, the water level in Bhakra had reached 1678 feet. Which was just 2 feet below the danger mark, so a decision was taken to open the flood gates of the dam. No information has been found about how high the gates were raised, but in 1988 the gates were opened up to 4 feet. On the other hand, BBMB has told that 1.50 cusecs of water has been released from Pong Dam. The water level in Pong Dam has crossed 1400 feet. After which 1,14,785 cusecs of water has been released.
