In 2004, the government of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced to hold elections 5 months ahead of schedule. In such a situation, BJP was feeling that it will easily form the government. BJP gave slogans of ‘India Shining’ and ‘Feel Good’.
Even before the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party had decided that it would contest the elections by forming an alliance. In fact, after staying away from power for 8 years due to third front politics, Congress does not want to leave any stone unturned this time. In the elections, the fight became face-to-face.
As the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi had the responsibility to unite everyone. He also acted against the decisions of the party. In 1998, the annual working committee meeting of the Congress was held in Pachmari, Madhya Pradesh. It was decided that the party would no longer form alliances with regional parties.
Sonia Gandhi brushed it aside in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. After this, Sonia played many important roles in forging alliances with smaller parties. Similarly, Sonia formed an alliance with the NCP in Maharashtra and took on the PDP in Jammu. There was an attempt to bring BSP and SP together in UP, but it did not work out here. After this, for the first time, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was formed under the leadership of the Congress. Sonia Gandhi became its chairperson.
The slogan of the Congress campaign was “The hand of the Congress, with the Aam Aadmi”. This slogan was superseded by “India Shining”. Experts believe that BJP’s slogan was in English and could only reach the urban class.

When the Congress party decided to enter the election field by forming an alliance through the UPA, the BJP also chose the NDA to form an alliance with the smaller parties. Many people have got jobs in government sector. BJP also raised the issue of Sonia Gandhi being a foreigner.
Amidst all this, the BJP distanced itself slightly from Hindutva policies and rode on the feel-good factor. The Election Commission had announced to hold elections in four phases from April 20, 2004. In this election results, NDA lost and Congress became the largest party by winning 145 seats. BJP has got 138 seats.
