Mumbai, Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Ajit Pawar said on Wednesday that the recent unseasonal rains and hailstorm in the state have damaged standing crops in over one lakh acres. Talking to reporters here, Pawar demanded that the state government should provide assistance to the affected farmers.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Pawar said, “Onion, papaya, grapes and other crops have been destroyed.” Pawar said that as the Leader of the Opposition, he would hold a meeting on Wednesday with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for the committee that has been formed to make some appointments. “I will also inform them about the loss caused to the farmers,” he said.

Asked about reports about the Enforcement Directorate giving him a clean chit in the alleged scam in the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank, Pawar said it was not true and the probe was still on. Asked about Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray’s meeting with NCP president Sharad Pawar on Tuesday, former deputy chief minister Pawar said he was not aware of what transpired during the meeting.

He said, “The two leaders had not met for a long time. A rally of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (of which the NCP and the Thackeray-led Shiv Sena are constituents) is also scheduled to be held in Mumbai on May 1.” Asked about Congress leaders criticizing the NCP, Pawar said MVA allies should sort out their differences among themselves and not talk to the media. He said he would speak on the issue at a rally in Nagpur on April 16.
