Thane (Maharashtra). Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday hit back at Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Ajit Pawar’s claim that “selfish” leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had carried two ailing MLAs via ambulance for the Legislative Council and Rajya Sabha elections. Sent from Pune to Mumbai to vote.

Kasba MLA Mukta Tilak and Chinchwad MLA Laxman Jagtap arrive in an ambulance at the Legislature Complex in Mumbai to vote for the BJP in both the elections held in June last year. In both the elections, there was a close contest between the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi and the opposition in terms of one vote each.

Jagtap’s death necessitated the bypoll in Chinchwad. Addressing an election rally earlier in the day, senior NCP leader Pawar said, “This rush (to be called for votes while ill) was unbearable for them (Tilak and Jagtap), but they remained silent for the party. BJP should have understood that health is more important than elections but these selfish people (BJP leaders) did not pay heed.”

Hitting back at this, Fadnavis said, “There are leaders in our party who will give their blood and life for the party. We are proud of him. We do not have selfish leaders like NCP.”

Fadnavis was here in Dombivali to participate in a two-day conference involving the Brahmin community. The bypolls to Chinchwad and Kasba in Pune district, necessitated by the death of Jagtap and Tilak respectively, will be held on February 26. Tilak died on December 22 last year, while Jagtap died on January 3 this year. (agency)
