He was the Second-in-Command (2IC) of 160 Territorial Army (JAK Rifles). He was previously posted in the 19th Battalion of the Brigade of Guards. Karanbir Singh Nath was also awarded the Sena Medal for his bravery.

His family lives in Batala, Punjab. His father Jagtar Singh retired from the army with the rank of colonel. Lt. Col. Karanbir Singh was born on 18 March 1976. He is survived by wife Navpreet Kaur and daughters Ashmeet and Gunita. The daughters repeatedly asked their mother when their father would wake up.
