Krishna Janmashtami: This year Janmashtami will be celebrated on 6th and 7th September. Astrologers believe that Krishna’s birthday should be celebrated only on the night of the 6th, because on this night the same combination of date and constellation is formed, as in Dvaparyuga.
Also, according to the Vaishnava sect, the festival will be celebrated on the 7th in major Krishna temples including Dwarka, Vrindavan and Mathura. Shri Krishna’s birthday will be between 7th and 8th at 12 pm. According to the scriptures, it is the 5250th birthday of Lord Krishna.
Ashtami Tithi will start on September 6 at 3.30 pm and continue till September 7 at 4 pm. Sri Krishna was born on the night of Ashtami Tithi, so astrologers and Shastras say to celebrate Janam Ashtami on the 6th. Ashtami Tithi will be at sunrise on the 7th, so as per the tradition of Uday Tithi, Janam Ashtami will be celebrated on this day in most temples. In this context, Janmashtami will be celebrated on September 7 in most parts of the country.
Janamashtami will be celebrated on 6th in Banaras
Dean of Astrology Department of Banaras Hindu University Prof. Girijashankar Shastri says that the scriptures named Dharma Sindhu and Nirjan Sindhu are used to fix the dates of fasts and festivals. In these two scriptures, it is said for Janmashtami that Krishna’s birthday should be celebrated on Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nachhatra at midnight. Celebrate Krishna’s birthday on the night of September 6-7 because like Shivaratri and Diwali, Janmashtami is also celebrated at midnight. Janam Ashtami will be celebrated on September 6 in Banaras.
Astrologer Dr. Ganesh Mishra of Puri says that this time Jayanti Yoga is happening due to Ashtami Tithi, Wednesday and Rohini Nachhatra on Krishna Janam Utsav. Such a conjunction also took place during the birth of Krishna in the Dwapara Yuga. On this day 5 states like Shasha, Lakshmi, Saral, Ubhayachari and Damini will be yoga.
Why Janam Ashtami on September 6?
Ashtami Tithi will start from 3.30 PM on 6th, but Rohini Nachhatra along with Ashtami Tithi will occur on mid night of 6-7. This conjunction is considered to be the birth of Krishna.
Why Janam Ashtami on September 7?
When the sun rises on September 6, it will be Saptami Tithi. Ashtami Tithi will be at sunrise on 7th, it is called Uday Tithi. In many cases, Udaya Tithi is important in astrological calculations. In this context, 6 will be treated as Saptami Tithi and 7 as Ashtami Tithi.
Why are most festivals two days long?
This happens because the dates of the Hindu calendar do not correspond to the English calendar. Often the dates start in the afternoon or evening and last until the next day. Dates which have importance of worship are mostly observed on Uday Tithi after fasting all day. The importance of Uday Tithi is not seen in those dates in which night worship is more important. For example, if Amavasya has started a day earlier in Diwali, Lakshmi Poojan will be performed in the night of the previous Amavasya instead of the Amavasya of Udaya Tithi.
