Campaign against anti-Delhi Ordinance: AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s campaign against the Modi government’s ‘anti-Delhi’ ordinance is gaining strength in a big way with the support of opposition parties. After JD(U), RJD, TMC, Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP, BRS and the Left, DMK has also extended its support to the campaign.

Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday visited Chennai to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President MK Stalin. CM Stalin assured that his party would vote against the ordinance in the Rajya Sabha and work to defeat it.

Expressing gratitude to Chief Minister MK Stalin for his support, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal highlighted the unjust actions of the BJP-led central government. He asserted that despite the people of Delhi fighting for justice for 8 years, the Supreme Court verdict in their favor was overturned by the BJP in just eight days. He termed the Centre’s ordinance as undemocratic, unconstitutional and against the federal structure of the country.

The Delhi Chief Minister further revealed that his campaign is getting good response from political parties across India. With each passing day, his confidence is growing, and he believes that he will successfully defeat Bill. He asserted that the outcome of this battle in the Rajya Sabha would act as a crucial semi-final for the 2024 elections, sending a powerful message that a united opposition is standing against the Modi government. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, MP Sanjay Singh, MP Raghav Chadha, Delhi Minister Atishi were also present in the meeting along with DMK leaders Thiru TR Balu and Kanimozhi.

Expressing gratitude for the warm welcome, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal highlighted the purpose of the meeting – to discuss the recently issued Ordinance by the Central Government. The Chief Minister said the ordinance was an attempt to undermine the hard-fought victory of the people of Delhi in the Supreme Court that came after an eight-year legal battle.

On 11 May 2023, the Supreme Court issued a revolutionary order in favor of the people of Delhi, explaining the importance of an elected government’s right to rule. Recognizing the overwhelming majority of the elected government, the court affirmed that control over services and bureaucrats is essential for effective governance. The court directed that the elected government should have full and direct control over the services and bureaucrats, ensuring that all powers rest with the elected government.

However, on 19 May 2023, soon after the Supreme Court went on vacation, the BJP government at the Center passed an ordinance at 10:00 PM, nullifying and disregarding the Supreme Court order. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that this action is against the principles of democracy and disregards the sanctity of the judiciary. The Chief Minister clarified that the Ordinance once again takes away its powers from the elected government, leaving it no longer in control of the bureaucracy and services.

Claiming the unconstitutionality and undemocratic nature of the ordinance, Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal highlighted the importance of upholding the principles of democracy enshrined in the Constitution. He asserted that the people have the right to elect their own government, which should have all the necessary powers to run the administration effectively. “We live in a democracy, we have a constitution, and the constitution says that there will be elections and the people will choose their government which will have all the powers to run the administration,” he said.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann thanked his Tamil Nadu counterpart MK Stalin and said that the AAP delegation has not come here to highlight the problems of the people of Delhi, but to save democracy.

He said that the BJP is harassing the non-BJP states of the country either by issuing unconstitutional ordinances or through the governor’s office. He said, “As you all know here in Tamil Nadu the state government headed by MK Stalin is constantly harassed by the governor who is refusing to sign the bills. Similarly in Punjab, my government had to go to the Supreme Court because the Governor was not giving permission to convene the budget session of the Legislative Assembly.”
