Chandigarh: The heat currently prevailing in all of North India, including Punjab, has made life difficult for people. If you have to leave the house for some reason, cover your head with an umbrella or cloth while going in the sun and use shoes and goggles. Light colored and loose cotton clothes should be preferred.

Keep windows and curtains closed during the day to avoid direct sunlight and heat, especially on the sunny side of your home. Open them at night to let cool air in.

Do not let the body lack water. Keep taking fluids at short intervals. Consume water, lemon juice (nimbupani), lassi, water cumin, amaranth, coconut water or other locally available natural beverages but avoid alcoholic liquids. In addition, it is important to avoid caffeinated or soft drinks like cola or drinks with large amounts of sugar as these can actually cause more dehydration or upset stomach.

Eat watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber, pineapple, oranges, grapes, lettuce or other locally available fruits and vegetables as they contain plenty of water.
