The father had alleged that his son Harjit Singh was picked up by the police on April 29, 1992 from Thatthiyan bus stand near Sathiyala, Amritsar and kept in the Mal Mandi interrogation centre.

In 1997 the investigation was handed over to the CBI
Acting immediately, the High Court appointed a warrant officer to ensure Harjit Singh’s release from illegal police custody. Taking this matter forward, the High Court in December 1992 issued an order to the District and Sessions Judge Chandigarh for a judicial inquiry into the matter. The report of which was presented in the year 1995. Based on the report, on 30 May 1997, the High Court handed over the investigation of the matter to the CBI.

The police also did not hand over the bodies to the family members.
In the year 1998, CBI registered a case and found that Harjit Singh was abducted by Daljit Singh alias Motu, Satbir Singh and another person on 29 April 1992 from bus stand Thatthi. On 12 May 1992, Harjit Singh was murdered along with two other persons, Lakhwinder and Jaspinder Singh.

A police party led by then SHO PS Lopoke SI Dharam Singh called it a police encounter. Not only this, their bodies were not handed over to the family. The police also cremated the bodies of the three as they were unclaimed.

In this case, CBI has arrested 9 officials of Punjab Police Inspector Dharam Singh, SI Ram Lubhya, HC Satbir Singh, Daljit Singh alias Motu, Inspector Harbhajan Ram, ASI Surinder Singh, ASI Gurdev Singh, SI Amrik Singh and ASI Bhupinder Singh. . A case was registered against him under sections 364, 120-B, 302 and 218 of the IPC.

But among them 5 accused Harbhajan Ram, Ram Lubhya, Satbir Singh, Daljit Singh and Amrik Singh died during the trial and one accused Bhupinder Singh was sent to P.O. In which Inspector Dharam Singh, ASI Surinder Singh and Gurdev Singh have been declared guilty.
