Child Labor in Punjab : The Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is taking important steps to eradicate child labor from the state. Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur gave more information and said that under the “Mission Vatsalya Scheme” the department is continuously working to ensure the welfare of children caught in the clutches of child labour.

The Cabinet Minister said that the Punjab Government organized a State Level Workshop on Child Labor Elimination and Rehabilitation at Mahatma Gandhi State Level Institute of Public Administration, Chandigarh. He said that the main objective of this workshop was to assign responsibilities to each partner involved in the process of child rescue and rehabilitation under the “Action Month Against Child Labour”.

Dr. Baljit Kaur said that representatives of various departments including Social Security, Women and Child Development Department, Labor, Police and Education participated in the workshop to plan and execute effective raid and rescue operations. He said that district task forces were formed under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioners to ensure action against child labor at the district level.

The Cabinet Minister said that in order to eradicate leprosy such as child labor in the state, rescue operations were carried out on a large scale in all the districts of Punjab. District Child Protection Units in collaboration with the Child Protection Movement (BBA) conducted an awareness campaign in slums, schools, dhabas and eateries.

He said that a total of 131 raids were conducted across Punjab in connection with the eradication of child labour, as a result of which 173 children were rescued. 3 FIRs in Amritsar, 7 in Ludhiana, 8 in Patiala, 1 in Bathinda and 3 in Rupnagar to save children. were registered Besides, 33 challans were presented by labor inspectors under Section 14-D of the Child and Adolescent Labor (Management and Regulation) Act, 1986 against the offenders in different districts of the state. In addition, 11 children were admitted to schools in different districts and efforts are on to compensate 13 children under the Labor Act in the current financial year 2023-24.

The Minister expressed his satisfaction over the results achieved during the State Action Month against Child Labour. He appreciated the efforts of various departments, NGOs and partners, due to which the number of children rescued from the clutches of child labor has increased as compared to earlier.
