Canada is considering the possibility of capping the number of international students in a bid to curb the surge in housing demand and fix an out-of-control system. This is a move that may affect Indian students. This information has been given by Immigration Minister Mark Miller during an interview.
Miller's comments came as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's federal government faced criticism for welcoming increasing numbers of immigrants, both permanent and temporary, while the country faces a housing crisis. In reference to the number of international students in Canada, Miller told CTV. In an interview with the News, “The amount is alarming.
It is really a system that has gone out of control.” Miller said putting a cap on international students won't solve the housing crisis across Canada. But he did not say how much the government is planning to cut.
India was the first among the top 10 countries of origin of study permit holders in Canada in 2022 with a total of 319,000 students. The Liberals have set a goal of bringing in 485,000 immigrants this year and 500,000 in both 2025 and 2026. Temporary residents, largely international students and migrant workers, are another part of the equation, more than 300,000 of whom arrived in Canada in the third quarter of last year.
Miller said he would consider setting a cap on international students to help ease the housing crisis, possibly in both the first and second quarters of this year.
When asked why his government was only considering a cap now when the idea was mooted months ago, Miller said it was about what individual academic institutions in different states were doing ” The numbers need to be crunched at the federal level before being considered in a little more detail.
