Illegal compensation scam: Vigilance arrests six more accused for taking wrongful profit of crores of rupees

Punjab Vigilance Bureau: The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has arrested six more accused on Tuesday in the case of taking illegal compensation by planting guava trees in Bakarpur village of SAS Nagar district during the ongoing campaign against corruption in the state.

The arrested persons, including three men and three women, had obtained compensation worth crores of rupees from the government through illegal means during the acquisition of land by the government in the said village. So far, a total of 15 accused involved in this scam have been arrested.

Giving information in this regard, the spokesperson of the State Vigilance Bureau said that among the persons arrested in this case, the accused PD Gupta’s wife Sunita Gupta, her son Gaurav Kansal, resident of house no. 199, Sector 18, Chandigarh, including Gurminder Singh and Harminder Singh, residents of village Bakarpur, their mother Sukhraj Kaur besides Daljit Singh’s widow Amrik Kaur.

He further informed that during the investigation of the said illegal compensation scam, the Vigilance Bureau has obtained many documentary records from the Revenue Department, Land Acquisition Collector, GAMADA, Sub-Registrar Mohali, Horticulture Department etc. and the actions of the alleged beneficiaries and their role. have analyzed in detail, during which it was found that these beneficiaries with the connivance of some officials/employees of various departments have wrongly benefited themselves and caused huge loss to the government exchequer. Consequently, after naming many of the beneficiaries as accused in the case, raids were conducted at their residences for their arrest on Tuesday.

The spokesperson further said that during the investigation it was also observed that PD Gupta, his wife Sunita Gupta and their two sons Gaurav Kansal and Abhishek Kansal, residents of house no. 199, Sector 18, Chandigarh purchased one acre of land in village Bakarpur in the year 2018 in which each member had equal 1/4 share. During the land acquisition process, they fraudulently received around Rs.1 crore as compensation by falsely claiming to have planted a guava plantation on the said land since 2016. Due to which Gaurav Kansal and his mother Sunita Gupta have been arrested today after naming the above family members as accused in this case.

Similarly, Gurminder Singh and Harminder Singh, the two sons of village Bakarpur resident Amar Singh and their mother Sukhraj Kaur also fraudulently claimed compensation of Rs 1.84 crore per member with the connivance of officials of revenue and horticulture departments. He has been named as an accused in this case and arrested by the bureau.

Giving more information in this regard, he said that Amrik Kaur, widow of Daljit Singh of Bakarpur village and her son Varinder Singh have allegedly taken wrong compensation of Rs 1.25 lakh per member. Amrik Kaur has been named as an accused in this case and arrested. Apart from this, various teams of the Vigilance Bureau conducted raids at various places across the state to nab more accused and this special operation will continue further.
