Hundreds of flights scheduled for today at four German airports – Berlin, Hamburg, Hannover, and Bremen airports – will be cancelled throughout the whole day, impacting tens of thousands of passengers.
Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, and Bremen airports have been forced to cancel a large number of flights for today due to a one-day strike called by the regional trade union, Verdi, following an unsuccessful collective agreement over weekend and night shifts pay, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Commenting on the matter, the airports required the passengers to be understanding and advised everyone to check their flight status with the airline they booked the ticket.
It has been revealed that the strike has forced the Berlin airport to cancel a total of 200 departing flights, and according to the official website of Berlin, around 27,000 passengers who were scheduled to fly from the airport will be affected.
Apart from passengers departing from Berlin Airport, the latter has said that those arriving to the airport may also be affected and asked all passengers to make sure their flight will take off before leaving.
“Due to the warning strike by employees at the aviation security controls, no commercial departures will take place at BER today, March 13th. Incoming flights may also be affected. Passengers are asked to check with their airline regarding their flight status,” Berlin Brandenburg Airport wrote on its official Twitter account.
Hamburg Airport issued a warning too. The airport said regular departures will not be possible from late at night Sunday until late at night Monday. As for the arrivals, the airport explained that arriving flights would be possible during the strike.
“Ver.di strike: No departures possible today and almost half of the arrivals cancelled // Security check closed all day // No evening check-in for Tuesday flights,” Hamburg Airport stated.
The Washington Post explains that at least 123 departing flights scheduled for today at Hamburg Airport will be impacted, affecting over 30,000 passengers. The same noted that an additional 121 arriving flights could be delayed.
Due to the ongoing strike at the four above-mentioned airports, the number of flights booked for Tuesday has significantly increased compared to the other days.
The largest airline in Germany in terms of passengers it carries, Lufthansa, has said that it expects massive flight operations disruptions throughout the whole day today, and in order to make the situation less inconvenient, the airline has notified customers of alternatives.
Lufthansa said that it would offer alternatives to all affected passengers and stressed that it expects the operations to be back to normal as early as Tuesday.
