Renfe, Spain’s national passenger railway company, is planning to launch a total of 253 tourist trains this year that will travel through different autonomous communities in every season.
According to Turespana, Spain’s official tourism website, the offer of the Tourist Trains division for this year represents an increase of 30 per cent compared to the one produced in 2022, where 170 trains with tourist content depart from Renfe, in which 23,597 customers travelled, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
In addition, the offer of luxury tourism will increase by 57 per cent. The luxury segment Transcantábrico, Al Andalus, Costa Verde Express and Expreso de la Robla will experience the most significant increase in travel.
During this year, these trains are expected to make 87 round trips, marking an increase of 52 per cent compared to last year.
A night train is also expected to start in spring 2025 for all visitors who want to travel between Amsterdam and Barcelona. In June 2022, a project called “Good Night Train” was presented by the new Dutch-Belgian railway company European Sleeper. The same revealed that now a train line will start from the Netherlands to Spain.
After many delays in the departure, the European Sleeper has yet to come out with an announcement about the opening date of the road to Barcelona.
Moreover, the night train will depart from Amsterdam and stop in Rotterdam, Antwerp, Brussels and Lille. Then it will leave for the south of France and pass through Figueres, Girona and in the morning it will arrive in Barcelona.
In November of last year, the Spanish Minister of Tourism, Raquel Sánchez, pushed for further progress on transport projects of common interest in a bid to improve ties between Spain and Portugal.
In this regard, Minister Sanchez said that the critical point to be considered is to make changes in the transport projects so that people can move more easily between these two countries.
Furthermore, in September last year, the Spanish authorities launched a free rail travel scheme to help travellers as prices continued to rise.
The new scheme started on September 1, 2022, and lasted until December 31. Trips made on Rodalies and Cercanías trains and regional trips shorter than 300 kilometres on Media Distancia trains, will be free of charge.
