A year after the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the Minister of Interior of Germany, Nancy Faeser, has called on all European Union countries for a fairer distribution of refugees from Ukraine who have fled their country.

During an interview last week, Minister Faeser questioned the disparity between the Member States and pointed out that the number of Ukrainian refugees arriving in Spain is especially lower compared to the other countries, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Minister Faeser said that despite Spain having a greater population than Poland, the country received only around 160,000 Ukrainian refugees.

On the other hand, data show that since the beginning of the war, Poland has received more than 1,500,000 refugees from Ukraine.

Taking into account such differences, Minister Faeser recommended that Spain as well as other countries start receiving a higher number of Ukrainian refugees so that the pressure does not completely fall on Poland and other member states who have been receiving more refugees from Ukraine.

In addition to the above-mentioned, Minister Faeser said that Germany has received around 1.1 million Ukrainian refugees and stressed that due to the high number of arrivals, regional authorities have oftentimes felt pressure as they have been unable to accommodate everyone properly.

Just recently, the German authorities alerted that they are reaching their limits. The authorities said that if the number of arrivals does not start to decrease, they will need more schools, nurseries, and apartments, among others.

Data provided by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Destatis, show that the highest number of arrivals from Ukraine in Germany was registered between March and May 2022. The same revealed that the majority of arrivals from Ukraine were women.

Regarding the proportion of Ukrainian refugees in the total population, it was pointed out that it was the highest in Berlin in Hamburg. On the other hand, Schleswig-Holstein registered the lowest number of arrivals from Ukraine.

More specifically, Ukrainian refugees made up 0.37 per cent of the population in Berlin at the beginning of 2022, and the rate increased to 1.47 in October 2022. The percentage of Ukrainians also increased in Hamburg, reaching 1.26 per cent.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, shows that since the beginning of the war until February 21, 2023, a total of 8,087,952 refugees from Ukraine were recorded across Europe. The same revealed that until February 20, 2023, around 4,860,000 refugees from Ukraine registered for Temporary Protection of similar national protection schemes in Europe.
