WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the first case of H5N1 was reported in 1996. We have seen only rare and low transmission of H5N1 between humans. But we cannot assume that the situation will remain like this. We must be prepared for any change in the situation.

As always, people are advised not to touch or collect dead or sick wild animals, the World Health Organization says. Local authorities are advised to report them. WHO is working with national authorities to closely monitor the situation and search for cases of H5N1 infection in humans.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, infection with the bird flu virus can cause no symptoms or mild to severe illness in humans. If the condition becomes serious, the victim may even die.
