Seeing the poisonous air in Delhi-NCR, the Kejriwal government has decided to make artificial rain here. There may be artificial rain on November 20 and 21. IIT Kanpur conducted trials for this. After the trial, its report has been submitted to the Delhi government. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Roy has confirmed this. It has been claimed that with the help of artificial rain pollution can be controlled and the level of pollution will decrease.

In such a case, the question is what is artificial rain, to what extent it will reduce pollution, how will it happen and in how many countries of the world this process is used.

What is Artificial Rain?

With the help of chemicals, clouds are manipulated to produce rain. Rain caused by this is called artificial rain. However, it is not an easy process. It requires various permissions. In many countries of the world, like China, there has been a trend of artificial rainfall when needed.

How is artificial rain made?

Let us now understand how artificial rain is made. Science says that there must be some natural clouds in the sky for such rain to occur.

Planes are used for artificial rain. Through these, silver iodide, salt and dry ice are released into the clouds already present in the sky. This is called cloud seeding where it is thrown, releasing chemicals, moving the plane in the opposite direction. The salt particles attract the vapor present in the clouds. Along with this, moisture is also removed. It collects and forms raindrops and when the pressure increases, it becomes rain and falls. For this permission will have to be taken from the government agencies as well as DGCA.

Will Delhi’s air be clean with artificial rain?

Professor Mahindra Aggarwal of IIT Kanpur, who heads the project for artificial rainfall in Delhi-NCR, says that artificial rainfall can temporarily help deal with the current situation. This may provide relief from a few days to a few weeks. Many other reports say that it does provide some relief from toxic air, but it doesn’t last long.

It is easy to artificially rain before and after the monsoon because the clouds contain more moisture. But cloud seeding is not as successful in winter due to low humidity. Artificial rain is being used not only to clean the air, but also to fight fires and prevent drought. Experiments are ongoing in many countries.
