What is the rule regarding toll of soldiers?
According to sub rule B (i) of rule 11 of NHAI, army personnel were allowed to go toll free. But during 2014, it was amended by the Road and Transport Department and it was said that free toll exemption will be given to soldiers only during duty. Apart from this, retired soldiers were also excluded from it. NHAI had made it clear in the reply to RTI that if any soldier is traveling in his private vehicle then he will have to pay toll. In Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, many such cases are constantly coming up when there is a dispute between the army jawan and the employees of the toll plaza. That is why NHAI has handed over a copy of the rules to all the employees so that they can show it in case of any dispute. But the big question is that if soldiers were exempt from toll earlier, why not now? If the government changes it, then the army should also be informed about it so that they can give correct information about it to the soldiers. Thus one sided information can lead to major controversy at any time.
A few months ago, the Punjab government also wrote a letter to the NHAI to make toll free for the government employees on duty, but the National Highway Authority rejected it. Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari was asked by a journalist to make toll free for journalists in his area, but he flatly refused.
