Gujarat Police raids 17 jails in the state, 1700 policemen including officers involved in the operation

The official said that the raids are also being conducted to ascertain whether the prisoners are getting facilities under the law or not. Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) Vikas Sahay said that around 1,700 policemen, including officers, are involved in the operation which began last night.

Raid in sub-jails along with central jails

Vikas Sahai had told reporters last night that the raids were being conducted in central jails as well as sub-jails in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and other cities. Sahay said- The purpose of these raids is to find out whether any illegal activities are being conducted from the jails, as well as to stop them. Sniffer dogs have also been included in this campaign. He said that the other objective of the campaign is also to find out whether the prisoners are getting proper facilities under the law or not.

Smartphone recovered from jail barracks

The policemen involved in the operation are equipped with cameras and the entire process is being telecast live at the State Police Control Center in Gandhinagar where Minister of State for Home Harsh Shanghvi, DGP Sahai and other senior officials were present. Sahay said- During the action, the police interacted with the prisoners and jail officials. He said that smartphones were recovered from the prison barracks within hours of the raid. He said that more details about the raid would be shared during the day once the operation is over. Sahay said that the police officers are equipped with cameras to ensure transparency. Raids have also been conducted in Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Jail where alleged gangster Atiq Ahmed of Uttar Pradesh and several convicts in the Ahmedabad bomb blast case are lodged.
