France Digitises Naturalisation & Reintegration Application Procedure

The French authorities have announced that all applications for access to French nationality must now be made online.

The decision to move online the application procedure for those applying for naturalisation or reinstatement of French nationality was taken in order to facilitate the process for everyone, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

According to the French authorities, the online application can now be made through a new online platform โ€“ NATALI โ€“ set up by the Ministry of Interior of France. The new platform allows all its users to complete the formalities from the commodity of their homes without having to travel and informs the users of all the required documents.

โ€œSince February 6, 2023, you no longer have to travel to apply for naturalisation or reintegration into French nationality by decree nor to send your file by post. The procedure is totally dematerialised thanks to the NATALI teleservice, as indicated by the decree of February 3, 2023,โ€ the statement of the French administration reads.

The authorities have explained that while completing the application on the new platform, users will be able to monitor the progress of the file in real-time, and they will be made aware if any of the information is missing.

The same stressed that only the interview and the reception ceremony require the applicants to be present.

โ€œOnly the assimilation interview carried out for the examination of the file requires the presence of the applicant, as well as the reception ceremony if the application has received a favourable response,โ€ the French administration noted.

In addition to the above-mentioned, the NATALI service also permits its users to file administrative appeals online. However, it has been stressed that those living in French Polynesia, Guyana, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Saint-Martin-Saint-Barthรฉlรฉmy, New Caledonia, and Wallis and Futuna, will not be able to use the service for such purposes.

Furthermore, the online application process is also not yet available for foreigners in the French army. They will continue to be required to go to the prefecture to apply for naturalisation by decree.

All persons wishing to apply for naturalisation in France must be of legal age, and they must prove that they have been residing in France for a minimum period of five years.

The authorities further note that foreigners residing in France applying for naturalisation must also be in France at the time of signing the decree of naturalisation and must prove they have sufficient knowledge of the French language. Another condition that must be fulfilled is also the absence of criminal convictions.
