Portugal Extends Temporary Protection for Displaced People From Ukraine Until September

The Portuguese government has approved the decision to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees for another six months.

In a statement released on March 15, the European Commission revealed that since the start of the war in Ukraine in February last year, Portugal has granted temporary protection to 58,414 people displaced from Ukraine, of whom 34,099 are women and 24,315 are men, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

According to the EU Commission, minors make up 25 per cent of the total.

Meanwhile, the largest number of Ukrainian refugees granted temporary protection were registered in the municipalities of Lisbon (12,461), followed by Cascais (3,714), Porto (2,995), Sintra (1,970) and Albufeira (1,448).

At the end of last month, figures provided by the Foreign and Border Service (SEF) revealed that Portugal has granted a total of 58,043 temporary protection to Ukrainian citizens since the beginning of the Russian occupation of Ukraine. Meanwhile, minors were granted a total of 14,111 temporary protections.

The same source said that of the total, 33,900 temporary protections were granted to women and 24,143 to men. SEF also pointed out that in the Public Prosecutorโ€™s Office a total of 737 minors from Ukraine arrive in Portugal without their parents or representatives.

SEM data from 2022 show that Portuguese authorities granted temporary protection to 51,716 Ukrainian nationals. In addition to those with temporary protection permits, the Public Prosecutorโ€™s Office has accommodated around 728 children who arrived in the country unaccompanied.

Furthermore, similarly to Portugal, Lithuania has recently announced that all types of documents issued on the basis of temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees would be valid until March 4 next year.

In this regard, the Migration Department of the country said that until March 6, 2023, a total of 41,933 Ukrainian refugees have valid permits to live temporarily in this country on the basis of temporary protection.

Based on these data, 35,039 people have been provided with digital permits and another 6,894 have temporary residence permits in the form of plastic cards.

At the same time, the Irish authorities have also decided to extend the period of temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens until March 4, 2024.

According to the authorities, this means that holders of such status do not have to apply for an extension and all future applicants who receive a residence permit for these reasons will be valid until the above-mentioned period.
