The Punjab Police has registered 932 FIRs against farmers for stubble burning since November 8 while a fine of Rs 1.67 crore has been imposed in 7,405 related cases. A senior official gave this information on Sunday (November 19). According to Special Director General of Police Arpit Shukla, wrong entries have been made in the revenue records of 340 farmers related to stubble burning.

The DGP said that the concrete efforts made by the Punjab Police to prevent stubble burning have yielded significant results and there has been a significant reduction in the cases of stubble burning during the last two days. 740 and 637 stubble burning cases were recorded in the state on Sunday and Saturday respectively.

Stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana is believed to be a major reason behind the dangerous rise in air pollution levels in the national capital Delhi during the months of October and November. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was 290 at 7 am on Sunday. AQI in Delhi was 319 on Saturday, 405 on Friday and 419 on Thursday. Along with this, the air quality index remained in the ‘very poor’ and ‘poor’ category in several parts of Haryana and Punjab.
