Finnish Passport Is the Most Powerful in the Nordic Countries & World’s 4th

Finnish citizens are some of the world’s most privileged travellers as a passport issued by Finnish authorities is listed as the world’s fourth most powerful passport, unlocking hurdle-free travel to the majority of world countries for its holders.

A newly launched passport index by VisaGuide.Worldwhich is the first ever to rank world passports in a more comprehensive and accurate way than any other existing index, based on a carefully-built formula that takes more factors into consideration, has revealed that the Finnish passport is listed as the second strongest in Europe, just behind Italy, which is the world’s third.

While Japan and Singapore are listed first and second in this index, with a score of  90.28 and 90.01, respectively, out of 100, Italy is listed third with a score of 88.28, and Finland sits fourth with a score of 88.18.

Germany is listed only fifth, with 88.17 collected in the index, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Commenting on the power of the Finnish passports, Besart Bajrami, the founder of SchengenVisaInfo.com  says that being a national of Finland, and having a valid passport issued by the authorities of this country, means being able to travel visa-free to a total of 107 world countries, while 51 of them permit passport-free entry for Finnish ID holders.

“Citizens of Finland holding a valid ID can enter 37 world countries without a passport and without a visa. A very limited number of world countries offer their citizens such a privilege, and the majority of them are EU members, like Finland,” Bajrami points out.

These 53 countries include:

• 26 Schengen Area Countries
• Non-Schengen EU Members (Cyprus, Bulgaria, Ireland, Romania)
• European Microstates (Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and the Vatican City)
• Albania
• Bosnia and Herzegovina
• Kosovo
• Montenegro
• North Macedonia
• Serbia

At the same time, Finnish citizens can travel to 91 world countries visa-free, to 11 with an electronic travel authorisation, and to another nine with an e-Visa. Entry is also permitted with a visa obtained upon arrival by 34 world countries.

This means that Finnish citizens are obliged to obtain a traditional visa to only 28 world countries, which include countries like men, Nigeria, North Korea, Cuba, and Ghana, all of which rank low in VisaGuide’s Passport Index Destination Significance Score (DSS) – a combination of many factors which gives each passport unique value.

The other Nordic countries, in the meantime, rank as follows:

1. Denmark ranks seventh with a score of 87.89. Danish passport holders can travel visa-free to 116 countries, passport-free to 29, with an eTA to ten, to 33 with a visa-on-arrival and another ten with an e-visa.
2. Sweden ranks tenth with a score of 87.65, and Swedish citizens have visa-free access to 102 countries, passport-free to 43, with an eTA to 11, to 33 with a visa-on-arrival and nine with an e-visa.
3. Norway ranks 12^th with a score of 87.6. granting its holders the benefit of travelling without a passport to 38 countries, without a visa to 102, with an eTA to 11, 36 with a visa-on-arrival and ten with an e-visa.
4. Iceland ranks 23^rd with a score of 86.58. Those holding a passport issued by the Icelandic authorities can enter visa-free to 106 countries, with an eTA to 11, without a passport at all to 28, with an e-visa to 12, and with a visa-on-arrival to 29.
