The majority of flights at Dusseldorf and Cologne Bonn regional airports have been grounded today as the Verdi trade union has decided to hold a 24-hour strike.
The Dusseldorf airport said today that of the 330 flights planned for today, only 89 of them were able to take place. On the other hand, 29 of them were diverted to other airports in the country, and seven were rescheduled for tomorrow, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Commenting on the matter, Dusseldorf airport said that it has been dealing with problems due to the strike and recommended everyone makes sure that their flight is officially scheduled to take off before arriving at the airport so they do not face any inconveniences.
“The strike ends on Tuesday at 03:00. Even after that, there may still be isolated effects on air traffic. Passengers are therefore still recommended to find out about the current status of their flight from the airline or tour operator before starting their journey,” Dusseldorf airport wrote on its official Twitter account.
Cologne Bonn airport also said that tens of flights will not take place today due to the strike, Reuters explains.
According to Cologne Bonn airport, a total of 66 take-offs and 65 landings will not take place until the strike is over. The same revealed that 136 flights were planned for today and advised all passengers to stay updated with the most recent information before arriving at the airport.
“Due to the strike, there is no regular passenger air traffic. 136 passenger flights (69 take-offs, 67 landings) were regularly planned for the strike period, 134 will not take place. The terminals are almost empty; passengers were informed in advance by the airlines,” Cologne Bonn airport wrote on Twitter.
The strike taking place today at Dusseldorf and Cologne Bonn airport was announced by Verdi last week after the relevant authorities failed to reach an agreement regarding the workers’ working conditions and wages.
Commenting on the situation, a Verdi spokesperson said at the Cologne airport said that the reaction of employees is clear, requiring the employers to present results.
“If the employers continue to be obstructionist and do not present us with results, then the reaction of the employees here is clear,” the spokesperson stated.
Verdi, together with the German Civil Service Association, is requiring that the wage of state employers increased by 10.5 per cent, or at least €500 more a month.
