Reservations for Portugal’s southernmost region of the Algarve have already surpassed the same period 2019 figures, before the spread of the Coronavirus.

Such comments came from the President of Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), João Fernandes, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“What I talk about with various segments of activity, from Rent-A-Car, Golf, Tourist Animation, Tourist Accommodation, all are reporting that they have higher reservations compared to those they had in the same period in 2019,” Fernandes pointed out, according to the Portugal News report.

The president of RTA said that the results of the first months of this year were positive as revealed by the passenger figures which landed in the Algarve, which registered in January and February this year.

“January is the peak of the low season, it is the lowest month while we are having great results,” Fernandes, pointed out, adding that this level of demand for what is often considered to be the weakest month of the year, is fabulous.

Fernandes noted that he is cautiously optimistic, after, according to him, one must be very attentive to international realities that can change positive expectations.

Portugal is experiencing a surge in the number of foreign visitors thus recovering from the damages caused by the spread of the Coronavirus and its new variants.

Portugal also was subject to significant financial losses caused by COVID-related restrictions, which affected the travel and tourism industry.

However, the data provided by the National Statistics Institute (INE) revealed that the country’s tourist accommodation establishments opened their doors to a total of .5 million passengers while recording 3.5 million overnight stays in the first month of this year.

In addition, INE data revealed that there was marked an increase of a total of 72.5 per cent as well as 74.5 per cent, compared to the figures of the same period last year, while the external markets totalled 2.3 million overnight stays, thus accounting for nearly the double of the figures registered in January 2022.

Based on INE figures, the number of foreign visitors as well as overnight stays also experienced a notable surge of 3.2 per cent and 6.5 per cent in comparison to January 2020 data.

“In January all the seventeen main issuing markets registered increases in January, having represented 83.8 per cent of overnight stays from non-residents,” INE pointed out.

Authorities in Portugal have increased their efforts to bring to the country a large number of international visitorsthus helping the country’s economy recover from the damages caused by the spread of the Coronavirus and its new variants.
