So far 342 cases have been reported

Compared to the last two years, there has been a huge increase in stubble burning incidents this time till October 1. In Punjab, 228 cases of stubble burning were registered till October 1 in 2021, while the number was 192 in 2022. This year the number of these cases has reached 342. Thus, in just 16 days from September 16 to October 1, more than one and a half times of stubble has been burnt in the fields.

71303 cases of stubble burning were registered in Punjab

Although the state government is making many efforts to manage stubble in Punjab. On the contrary, according to the Union Ministry of Agriculture, Punjab is leading among the six states in burning paddy stubble across the country. In the year 2022, a total of 69,615 cases of stubble burning were reported in six states of the country from September 15 to November 30. Out of these the maximum 49,922 cases were from Punjab only. In the year 2021 also, the highest number of 71303 cases of stubble burning was recorded in Punjab.

Five districts are ahead in stubble burning

Last year, the highest number of stubble burning incidents occurred in five districts of Punjab, Sangrur, Bathinda, Ferozepur, Muktsar and Moga, which accounted for about 44 percent of the total stubble burning incidents in the state. This year, the government has started strict vigilance in six districts of Hoshiarpur, Malerkotla, Pathankot, Rupnagar, SAS Nagar (Mohali) and SBS Nagar under its action plan. But during the last 16 days, maximum 86 cases of stubble burning have been reported in Amritsar district. Along with this, 6 cases of stubble burning have also been registered in Tarn Taran.

The level of pollution started increasing

The level of pollution has started increasing in many districts due to stubble burning incidents in Punjab. In Amritsar, where most cases of stubble burning are being reported, the air pollution level has increased to 109 from 86 on October 1. Similarly, the pollution level in Mandi Gobindgarh has increased from 106 to 167.

The Punjab government made an action plan

The state government is all set to curb the incidents of stubble burning. 776 Nodal Officers have been appointed. On the one hand, action will be taken against the farmers who burn stubble, while on the other hand, the administration will respect the farmers who cooperate in not burning stubble. Along with the estimated bumper production of paddy in Punjab this year, around 2 crore tonnes of paddy straw will also be removed.

Punjab government made this plan

The Punjab government has submitted an action plan to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) this year to tackle the problem of stubble burning. It has been reported that the state government has set a target of reducing stubble burning incidents by more than 50 percent this year compared to 2022. 1,17,672 CRM machines will be used to dispose of stubble in fields instead of burning it.

Government plans to install bio decomposers

It is estimated that in 2023, about 11.5 metric tons of straw will be handled by machines and 4.67 metric tons by other means. At present, 23,792 Custom Hiring Centers (CHCs) have been set up in the state, through which farmers can get CRM machines. The government also plans to install bio decomposers in 8,000 acres of paddy fields.

Preparation of strict action against stubble burners

The government has asked the district administration for a list of farmers whose fields have been shown in satellite images of stubble burning in the last 16 days. Apart from registering cases against farmers under various sections related to stubble burning and air pollution, the government has decided to strictly enforce the old red mark rule on land registries. Due to this red mark, farmers will not be able to take loans from banks.
