A massive explosion took place on Wednesday morning while cutting scrap in a godown on Guha Road near Bajrangbali Loha Market in Ghusuri area of the city. Six workers were injured in the incident, out of which the condition of four is serious. The intensity of the explosion can be gauged from the fact that someone’s hand was cut off and someone’s leg fell away. It is said that the work of harvesting iron scrap was going on in Trim Dust Metal and Shree Industries. Four factories run simultaneously in this godown. This warehouse belongs to four brothers of the same family, which runs under different names.

It is said that after the incident, about 25 meters high flames and a balloon of smoke rose. Panic spread in the area after hearing the sound of the explosion. Seeing the horrific explosion and smoke, people climbed on the roofs of the houses. Immediately the fire department was informed about the incident. Within minutes, two fire engines reached the spot. The fire was brought under control after an hour’s effort. Malipanchghoda police reached the spot, rescued the injured and got them admitted to TN Jaiswal Hospital.

A person from the area told that the incident took place when the workers were cutting the petrol tank (underground tank at the petrol pump) in the godown with a gas cutter. There must have been petrol or diesel inside the tank. Probably this might have started the fire and caused the explosion. People say that more than 10 workers were working. On the other hand, DC North Anupam Singh of Howrah City Police told that the work of cutting a cylinder was going on. The explosion occurred while cutting the cylinder. How the explosion took place is a matter of investigation. Six people were injured in the incident.
