Death of 784 elephants in Odisha in last one decade is unfortunate. In the last three years alone, 245 elephants have died in the state due to various reasons. Seven elephants have lost their lives in the state only in the month of March. On an average, 80 elephants are dying in the state every year, which is a matter of concern. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said these things in a letter to Union Forest and Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Along with this, he requested to take necessary steps to stop the human-elephant conflict in the state. Shri Pradhan said in the letter that the incidents of death of elephants are continuously increasing in Odisha. The conflict between elephant and man is the biggest challenge for us today.
Elephants lost their lives due to hunting, electrocution, train and road accidents
The Education Minister said in the letter that I am writing this letter to you expressing deep concern over the increasing number of deaths of elephants and the human-elephant conflict in the state. In the month of March alone, seven elephants have died in Odisha, one of which occurred in the Satkosia Sanctuary. Most of the elephants have died due to hunting, electrocution, train or road accident. The Union Minister said that considering this serious situation in Odisha, the intervention of the Ministry of Forest, Environment and Climate Change would be important.
Pradhan said that conservation of elephants is of utmost importance in Odisha as this giant animal is an integral part of the state’s ecological balance, cultural heritage and identity. Pradhan said that the well-being of these creatures is essential for the well-being of our forests and for maintaining the livelihood of the local community.
