European Tourism Organizations Co-Sign Code of Conduct Agreement on Tourism Data Sharing

About 20 organizations representing the travel and tourism sector at the European level approved an agreement to sign a Code of Conduct for data sharing in the tourism sector.

Through a statement issued today, March 8, the European Travel Commission (ETC) emphasised that this decision has come in an attempt to respond to the digital transition of tourism. The same also said that the non-binding document clarifies the main aspects that should be taken into account in data exchange agreements, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

According to ETC, data related to tourism is becoming increasingly important and, at the same time, is an essential resource that promotes competition, innovation, and job creation in this sector.

Considering that tourism comprises ten percent of the GDP of the EU, the development of the data economy in tourism at the EU level is very essential.

Thus, with the creation and approval of this Code of Conduct, the European stakeholders define the appropriate conditions for constant tools for the exchange of data related to tourism.

โ€œThis document aims at building trust between tourism stakeholders and providing support in the creation of mutually beneficial data sharing agreements in the tourism industry,โ€ the statement of ETC reads.

In this regard, ETC added that with common principles, including interoperability, security and accountability definitions, and guidelines for data sharing, this document contributes to the EU-wide architecture for the exchange of non-personal data.

In addition, the authority pointed out that this document is being created in time to respond to some challenges related to access, use, and sharing of data in a qualitative way. It also highlights how to ensure privacy and security during data collection and processing.

Such a document will also create an equal playing field where the public sector, the private sector, and the interested parties have equal chances and opportunities to use and exchange data in tourism.

Furthermore, with their support as a sector, tourism stakeholders can show their active commitment and the same goals of the European digital strategy for tourism and the main goals of the Transition Road for Tourism.

The Code of Conduct is also a tool for the active sharing of tourism-related data. It is a strong step towards the goals of a common European Tourist Information Space, which is under preparation as well.
