Hamburg Granted German Citizenship to Over 6,200 Residents in 2022

The Hamburg Senate has announced that the city granted German citizenship through naturalisation to a total of 6,298 residents, setting a new record.

According to Hamburg Senate, the number of naturalisation applications has almost doubled in five years and has increased by over 1,000 completed procedures compared to 2021, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

โ€œCompared to the previous year, the number of naturalizations has increased by more than 1,000 completed procedures. In addition, the number of applications for naturalisation submitted in the past calendar year again increased significantly,โ€ the statement of the Hamburg Senate reads.

Data provided by Hamburg Senate show that the city received a total of 10,698 naturalisation applications in 2022. This increase has been linked to the high number of Syrians who entered Germany as part of the migration movement that started in 2015, as well as to nationals of other countries who decided to migrate to Germany for a better life.

Hamburg Senate disclosed that of the 6,298 naturalised persons last year, 1,084 of them were minors and 196 of them were over the age of 65 at the time of naturalisation.

As for the main countries of origin, it has been revealed that Syria, Afghanistan,ย  Tรผrkiye, Iran, Poland, Ukraine, Ghana, Iran, and India are the top nine countries whose nationals were granted German citizenship through naturalisation in 2022.

Official data show that a total of 1,541 citizens of Syria were granted German citizenship through naturalisation in Hamburg in 2022 โ€“ 854 more than in 2021.

A high number of citizens of the other countries mentioned above were also issued German citizenship through naturalisation in Hamburg.

749 nationals of Afghanistan, 517 nationals of Tรผrkiye, 471 nationals of Iran, 248 nationals of Iran, 248 nationals of Poland, 226 nationals of Ukraine, 164 nationals of Ghana, 151 nationals of Iraq, and 96 nationals of India who filed a naturalisation application were granted German citizenship in Hamburg last year.

In line with the current German law, a person must live legally for at least eight years and possess the appropriate residence permit to be eligible for naturalisation.

Foreigners who have completed an integration course are eligible for naturalisation after seven years and all those wishing to become German naturalised citizens must have sufficient command of the German language and declare their commitment to the countryโ€™s constitution.

In addition to the above-mentioned, naturalisation candidates must also be familiar with the legal system as well as living conditions in Germany. They must also give up their previous citizenship and be able to support themselves and prove that they do not have committed any serious criminal offences.
