The Council of the European Union has announced that the authorities have decided to add another 87 Russian individuals and 34 entities to its sanctions list.
Such a decision was taken in response to Russia’s continued full-scale invasion and military aggression against Ukraine, launched a year ago, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Commenting on the EU’s decision, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said that the 121 new listings are responsible for military activities and malicious narratives, among others.
“Today we are targeting 121 individuals and entities who are instrumental in the continuation of this brutal war, including those responsible for military activities, for political decisions, who are polluting the public space with disinformation and malicious narratives, adding to the military warfare also through information warfare,” the statement of Borrell reads.
Moreover, Borrell added that the EU is also targeting individuals and entities involved in the forced adoption of Ukrainian children to Russia and inhumane deportation and those responsible for the development of drones targeting civilians in Ukraine as well as civilian infrastructure.
The Council points out that at the institutional level, the EU designates key decision makers, including 19 Deputy Ministers and several Russian Government officials, new Members of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, four Deputies of the State Duma, as well as All-Russia People’s Front and five individuals related to it.
Additionally, a number of designations are also adopted in the Russian military and defence sector, including military leaders, companies manufacturing missiles and other equipment, and commanders of the Wagner group.
In addition to the above-mentioned, it has been stressed that sanctions now also apply to individuals who are responsible for the forced adoption of Ukrainian children. The Council highly condemns such actions and says that the forced adoption of Ukrainian children in Russia is a clear violation of human rights and international law.
The Council has decided to also impose restrictions on four Iranian individuals who are involved in the elaboration as well as the supply of drones that are used by the Russian authorities against Ukraine.
Altogether, the restrictive measures of the EU in relation to actions threatening the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine apply to 1,473 individuals and 205 entities.
Those who are subject to restrictive measures are prohibited from entering the EU or transiting through its territory. Moreover, they are also subject to an asset freeze, and EU individuals and entities are prohibited from making funds available to them.
The package of sanctions also includes export bans worth over €11 million, depriving the economy of Russia of critical industrial and critical tech goods.
