51.5% Increase in Number of Visitors at Latvia’s Tourist Accommodation Establishments in January

A total of 120,100 non-resident and resident tourists were registered in Latvian tourist accommodation facilities during January of this year, marking an increase of 51.5 per cent compared to the same month last year.

These figures are provided by the Central Bureau of Statistics of Latvia (CBS), also reveal that guests spent 217,100 nights in these establishments, which is 48.1 per cent more than in January 2022, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

During the first month of 2023, non-resident arrivals in tourist accommodation facilities accounted for 52.4 per cent or 62,900 people, which is 2.1 times more than in January last year and 43.3 per cent less than in January of 2020.

The same source also pointed out that the number of nights spent by non-residents, compared to January 2022, has doubled with a total of 118,600. At the same time, they spent an average of 1.9 nights in tourist accommodations.

According to Statistics, among the countries where the largest number of non-resident travellers come are:

  • Lithuania – 10,400
  • Estonia – 8,100
  • United Kingdom – 5,900
  • Germany – 4,400
  • Finland – 3,400
  • United States and Ukraine – 2,700

In addition, a total of 20,700 non-residents or 32.9 per cent of them came from neighbouring countries of Latvia, followed by Lithuania with 16.6 per cent, Estonia with 12.9 per cent, Russia with 2.1 per cent and Belarus with 1.3 per cent.

Further statistics show that a large part of non-residents took shelter in Riga (79 per cent), followed by Jūrmala with (4.8 per cent), Mārupe municipality with (4.7 per cent), Liepāja with (2.1 per cent), Valmiera municipality with (1.2 per cent) and Rēzekne with (1.1 per cent).

As for resident arrivals, they registered 57,200 people in tourist accommodation establishments during January of this year, representing 14.7 per cent more than in January 2022 and 8.1 per cent more than in January 2020.

Resident visitors also spent 98,500 nights in the premises, which is an increase of 13.5 per cent compared to January of the previous year.

They stayed mostly in Riga with 30.3 per cent, followed by Jūrmala with 16.6 per cent, Liepāja 6.2 per cent, Sigulda and Cēsis 4.6 per cent, Daugavpils 3.9 per cent and Valmiera with three per cent.

Moreover, last year’s CBS data revealed that the number of international and domestic visitors to Latvia in June 2022 reached 245,900or twice as much compared to the same period in 2021.

At the same time, compared to the figures of 2021, the number of nights spent by travellers was 430,400 in June 2022, which is also twice as much compared to 2021.

Such data also show that during June of last year, 129,700 foreign visitors were received in tourist accommodation establishments, marking an increase of 6.2 times more than in June 2021.
