Chandigarh: To get compensation to the flood victims, a dharna was held in front of the Deputy Commissioner offices at the Punjab level by the United Farmers’ Front. The farmers’ leaders put forward their demands and said that the central government should declare the recent floods in Punjab as a national calamity and give a relief package of Rs. People can get adequate compensation for loss of life and property.

He said that the Punjab government should ensure the implementation of the orders of the special Girdavari. State General Secretary Jagmohan Singh Patiala from Patiala said that the farmers who have replanted the destroyed crops, their loss should be counted in the Girdavari, the testimony of the village panchayat, farmers’ organizations and the people should be considered as evidence in this regard and the crops should be recovered. Farmers should be compensated for the damage by making slabs.

Demands of farmers

• Those farmers whose entire crop of this season is bad and the crop of the next season is in crisis, should be given compensation of one lakh rupees per acre.

• The farmers who will not produce due to bad crop of this season should be given compensation of seventy thousand rupees per acre.

• Farmers whose paddy or any other crops were damaged but after the water receded should be given a compensation of 30,000 rupees per acre for sowing those crops.

• Farmers whose tubewells have collapsed or whose fields are filled with soil or sand should be exempted from the rules for removing sand and soil.

• To make the tubewells operational and to make the land cultivable, special compensation should be given separately to those farmers in addition to the damage compensation as per the damage caused.
• The families whose lives have died should be given compensation of Rs.10 lakh per live and Rs.1 lakh per animal for dead animals.

• Compensation of five lakh rupees per house should be given for damage to houses.
