Noida. The Uttar Pradesh Drug Controlling and Licensing Authority has initiated the process of canceling the manufacturing license of cough syrup maker Marion Biotech Pvt Ltd. The Center has given its instructions on Saturday.
Ethylene Glycol was found to be adulterated in 22 out of 36 samples taken for testing from Noida-based Marion Biotech Pvt Ltd. After which the Center directed the State Drug Controller Authority to cancel the manufacturing license of Marion Biotech.

“After 22 out of 36 samples taken for testing from Marion Biotech were found to be adulterated with ethylene glycol, the center recommended cancellation of manufacturing license to the state drug controller authority,” Gautam Buddha Nagar drug inspector said.
Significantly, 18 children died in Uzbekistan last year after drinking cough syrup made by a Noida-based company in Uttar Pradesh. Noida Police said on Friday that they have arrested three employees of the company.
What is ethylene glycol?
Ethylene glycol is an organic compound used as an antifreeze in motor vehicles. It is also called ‘glycol’. It was the precursor of polymers. Pure ethylene glycol is an odorless, colourless, syrupy and sweet-tasting liquid. It is poisonous and can cause death if ingested. It is a fragrant oily liquid.
It is sweet like glycerin and miscible with water and alcohol. In industrial method, it is obtained from ethylene gas. By the reaction of hypochlorous acid, it converts ethylene into chlorohydrin, which is heated with milk of lime to obtain ethylene glycol.
