MSP for Vegetables: Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal today demanded that as promised by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Punjab government agencies should purchase the minimum support price (MSP) of maize at the rate of Rs 2090 per quintal. So that the farmers can be saved from selling the commodity at a low rate.

Shiromani Akali Dal president said that the farmers trusted the Chief Minister’s announcement that maize would be purchased at MSP but now these same farmers are stuck in trouble as there is no one to buy the commodity due to which the farmers have to pay Rs 500 to private traders. 600 per quintal to sell maize.

Sukhbir Singh Badal demanded that the entire maize crop should be immediately procured at MSP and said that the government’s failure to do so would seriously hurt the Punjab government’s crop diversification efforts. He said that the Chief Minister had enthusiastically announced that maize, sunflower and pulses would be procured at MSP after which the farmers had increased the area under these crops. He said that now when the time has come to buy the goods, the AAP government is running away from its responsibility.

Badal demanded that apart from purchasing maize at MSP, the government should compensate the farmers who sold the commodity to private traders at a lower rate. He said that the government should release the compensation immediately. They also demanded that the government should help the farmers in bringing the corn crop to the markets.

He said that necessary dryers should be provided for drying the crops in the mandis and cleaning facilities should also be provided. Also, the B Akali Dal President asked the Chief Minister not to make such hollow promises which he has no intention of fulfilling. He said that last year, the farmers who believed the Chief Minister’s words that the state government would buy the mung bean crop at MSP, had to bear huge losses.

Badal further said that the farmers increased the area under mung bean cultivation by 55 percent but when the crop came in the market, there were no buyers and many farmers could not even recover their costs.

Badal asked the government to take corrective steps immediately. Sardar Badal asked the Chief Minister to apologize to the farmers for playing with their sentiments. He said that the Chief Minister has not only cheated the farmers but has rubbed salt in the farmers’ wounds by promoting his ‘initiative’ with multi-crore advertisements.

Sukhbir Singh Badal also demanded from the government that MSP should be introduced for vegetables as well and asserted that the middlemen rob the farmers and they are forced to sell their produce at cheap prices. He told how recently the farmers had to throw their capsicum on the roads after not getting a fair price. He said that insurance facility should also be given to the farmers cultivating vegetables. He said that frequent unseasonal rains have also caused damage to the vegetable growers but the AAP government has not given them any compensation.
