India's star chess player Rameshbabu Pragnanandha has once again excelled. He created history by defeating world champion Ding Liren in the Tata Steel Chess Tournament on Tuesday (January 16).

This made him the number one ranked Indian Grandmaster for the first time defeating veteran chess grandmaster Viswanathan Anand. The victory against world champion Liren of China surprised Pragnandha as he did not expect the former player to lose so easily.

“I thought I got par pretty easily and then somehow things started going wrong for him,” Chase.com quoted Pragnandha as saying. Even after winning the pawn, I still thought he could hold on to the match. I think any day, if you beat such a strong player, it is always special because they are not very easy to beat. It feels good to win for the first time against a world champion in classical chess.”

Pragnandha has been in the headlines for defeating top players before. He has defeated multiple world champion and world number one Magnus Carlsen of Norway.

Last year too, he performed brilliantly in the Chess World Cup and made it to the finals. After a close fight in the title match, he lost in a tie breaker. He became the third youngest player to reach the final of the Chess World Cup.
