Chennai Open Challenger: Nagal and Mukund in the main draw of singles

Indian players Sumit Nagal and Shashikumar Mukund on Monday won their qualifying round matches to enter the singles main draw of the Chennai Open ATP Challenger tennis tournament. Nagal cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ji Sung Nam in his second round of qualifying, while Mukund saw off top seed Jason Jung of Taipei 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Defeated and reversed and secured his place in the main draw.

Digvijayapratap Singh, however, crashed out of the tournament after losing to third seed James McCabe of Australia 2-6, 6-7. With Nagal and Mukund qualifying for the main draw, four Indian players will play in the main draw. The two will join the country’s top stars Prajnesh Guneswaran and Ramanathan Ramkumar.

26-year-old Mukund defeated Jung in a match that lasted for two hours and 24 minutes. This will see him face 2022 Wimbledon men’s doubles champion Max Purcell in the first round of the main draw. Nagal will face fourth seed Ryan Penniston of Britain in the first round.

Prajnesh and Ramkumar got a wild card entry into the main draw of 32 players. Prajnesh will face Britain’s Jay Clarke in the first round and Ramkumar will face Dimitar Kuzmanov. In the first round of the singles section of the main draw, Seong Chan Hong upset third seed Sebastian Offner of Austria 6-4, 6-3. Top seed Chun-Sean Seng defeated Nino Serdarcik 6-4, 7-6 in a match that lasted for one hour and 58 minutes.
