Chennai: Air India staff arrested in gold smuggling case, officials seized 2.55 kg gold

Chennai Gold Smuggling: Customs officials have arrested an Air India employee from Chennai airport. This employee has been accused of gold smuggling. If the reports are to be believed then about 2.55 kg gold is in the hands of the officials, the total cost of which is Rs 1.28 crore. Custom officials suspected the Air India employee when he tried to leave the departure area. On checking the staff, three pouches were recovered from him, inside which gold was kept in the form of paste.

Investigation under the Customs Act

After 2.55 kg of gold was destroyed by the Customs officials from the arrested employee, it is being investigated under the Customs Act. This is not the only incident of gold smuggling on Thursday. Custom officials arrested two Sri Lankans with 820 grams of gold on this day, its value has been measured to be around Rs 41 lakh.

Smugglers caught earlier also

Let us tell you that this is not the first incident when gold smugglers have been caught at the airport. Earlier on Wednesday, officials stopped two Indian citizens coming from Bangkok and seized 610 grams of gold hidden in their bags. Custom officials said that in total, the value of the seized gold is Rs 2 crore. Last year also, a customer service agent working for Air India Airport Services Limited (AIASL) here was booked for helping smuggle 988 grams of gold worth Rs 43.41 lakh.
