Britons Travelling to Cyprus Warned They Could Be at Greater Risk

The United Kingdom Foreign Office has issued an updated travel advice for all Britons planning to visit Cyprus, warning that they could potentially be at greater risk and vulnerable.

According to the Foreign Office, the advice comes after north Cyprus officials do not provide information about Britons in distress, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Despite the fact that Cyprus is an official member of the European Union, the country continues to remain divided by the Green Line. According to Liverpool Echo, the self-declared โ€œTurkish Republic of Northern Cyprusโ€ to the north line is not officially recognized by the government of the United Kingdom, meaning that anyone in distress risks being subject to greater risk.

โ€œThe authorities in north Cyprus do not share information regarding British Nationals in distress with the British High Commission, or the families affected. Even when the High Commission is aware of a British National in distress, the authorities in the north will not share information about their location, well-being, or treatment,โ€ the statement reads.

While recalling that the authorities in Cyrus will not share information with British High Commission on minors subject to United Kingdom court orders, it has also been emphasized that UK Foreign Office is ineligible to ensure that these minors are properly safeguarded.

In addition, the government has also called on visitors to the country that they should carefully follow the entry requirements for Cyprusโ€™ current entry requirements and restrictions when planning to travel while noting that if persons plan to pass through another country on their journey, they should check the travel advice for the country that they are transiting.

Cyprus is among the most favourite destinations for Britons, and it welcomes a large number of tourists from the UK each year.

In addition, in the first month of this year, there has been registered a significant increase in the number of tourist arrivals from Britain, according to a Cyprus Mail report.

The figures provided by the same source revealed that Cyprus welcomed 90,549 passengers in January this year, marking an increase of 106.1 per cent year-on-year increase compared to the figures of the same month last year during which period 43,944 visitors were recorded in Cyprus.

Britons accounted for the largest number of international arrivals in January this year, or 20.6 per cent of all arrivals. Cyprus Statistical Service figures revealed that 18,631 visitors from the UK travelled to Cyprus in January this year.

Besides, a recent survey conducted by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), published by Financial Mirror showed that Cyprus is among the ten most famous destinations for UK holidaymakers this year.
