Number of Work Permits Doubled in Portugal Throughout 2021

The number of permits granted for work purposes doubled in 2021, reaching a total of 35,886 temporary residence permits granted, twice more than in 2018.

According to Diario de Noticias, requests for residence permits for work reasons in Portugal have been on the rise, reaching a total of 115,000 between 2019 to 2021, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

SEF, the Immigration Services in the country, have revealed that 140,000 cases were filed between 2012 and 2021 for work purposes, and the number of requests filed in 2018 reached 80 per cent of the volume that was recorded during these four years.

In this period, only 20 per cent of almost 705,000 residence permits received a positive response since 2012, enabling beneficiaries to exercise their work activities.

The majority of those applying for a residence permit in Portugal were from the European Union and their family members, and until 2017, the main basis for granting residence. Moreover, looking at permanent and temporary residence permits, including citizens that have been issued a golden visa. Brazilians have received the total number of temporary protections – a total of 257,414, followed by Italians (40,496), Brits (39,483) and the French (35,587).

As per temporary protection, Portugal has granted a total of 58,043 protection statuses to Ukrainian citizens since the beginning of Russian military attack on Ukraine. Out of the total, 33,900 temporary protections were granted to women and another 24,143 were to men.

The most significant number of protections were granted in Lisbon (12,385), Cascais (3,665), Porto (2,976), Sintra (1,955) and Albufeira municipality, a total of 1,443. A total of 14,111 minors, representing nearly 25 per cent of the total, were granted temporary protection during this period.

As per golden visas, a total of 93 main applicants were granted Golden Visa by SEF and 153 family members accompanied the main applicants as dependents. As per nationalities, Americans represented the highest number (21) followed by Chinese (11), as well as Brits and Brazil, with ten, respectively.

Furthermore, as per investment type, 75 applicants purchased real estate, with 44 of those purchasing properties costing for €500,000 and more, while another 31 purchased €350,000 renovated properties. In addition, 18 applicants pursued capital transfer.

However, since 2013, Chinese nationals have obtained golden visas in Portugal – a total of 5,258, followed by Brazilians (1,178), followed by the Americans (558). In addition, Turks and South Africans obtained a total of 547 and 508, respectively. The majority of golden visa investment types were in real estate (9,152), followed by real estate of used properties (1,516) and capital transfer (535).
