Bhagwant Mannโ€™s appeal to Farmers: Describing crop diversity as an important need for Punjab, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann called upon the farmers to make an exemplary change in agriculture by adopting alternative crops like cotton, basmati and moong.

In a video message to the farmers of the state, the Chief Minister said that many crops were grown on the fertile land of Punjab but gradually the farmers have been limited to paddy. He said that this has a negative impact on the economy of the state because it requires a lot of electricity and water, due to which many areas of Punjab have come into the dark zone. Along with this, other problems also arise when straw is blown.

Bhagwant Mann said that to deal with this threat, there is a need to adopt alternative crops, for which a committee has been formed under the leadership of the Chief Secretary of the state, which will suggest alternative crops.

The Chief Minister said that for this, the state government will provide 33 per cent subsidy on cotton seeds approved by the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) besides guaranteeing the provision of canal water for the cotton crop from April 1. Besides this, insurance on cotton crop and Minimum Support Price (MSP) on Basmati will be given. Expressing deep concern over the many problems faced due to paddy, Bhagwant Mann said that the state government believes that the root of this problem can be eliminated by increasing the area under cotton and paddy cultivation. It has been decided to provide canal water from April.

CM Mann said that deputy commissioners and senior captains of police have been ordered to deploy police force to stop the theft of canal water so that the farmers who fall on the tails can get benefits. Bhagwant Mann said that during the first of its kind ‘farmer-government meet’, the issue of water theft by influential farmers was raised, for which the state government has decided to deal with it strictly. He hoped that this would lead to the production of good quality Nama. He urged the farmers not to use artificial seeds.

Talking about other steps taken for crop diversification, the Chief Minister announced 33 per cent subsidy on certified cotton seeds by the Agricultural University so that good yielding seeds are available to farmers at lower prices. He said that precautionary steps are also being taken to counter the attack of whitefly and pink hopper. Bhagwant Mann emphasized that extensive research into new pesticides has been decided to eliminate these problems.

Reiterating his commitment to protect the interests of farmers from all natural calamities, the Chief Minister also announced that the state government was considering an insurance scheme to cover the loss of cotton crop so that the farmers would not face any kind of problem in this regard. Don’t face it. He further said that Basmati will also be promoted as an alternative crop for crop diversification and he also assured to give MSP on Basmati. Bhagwant Mann said that Markfed will be the nodal agency for procurement of Basmati at MSP and the interests of farmers will be protected at all costs.

Bhagwant Mann said that laboratories are being constructed to educate farmers to determine the amount of pesticides sprayed on Basmati so that the Basmati crop meets the export standards of European countries regarding pesticide residues. While recommending cultivation of PR 126 and other such varieties of paddy, he said that efforts are being made to promote the approved varieties of PAU and to prevent farmers from cultivating varieties that require more time to mature and more water like Pusa 44.

He also said that the MSP on groundnut will continue, but recent research has revealed that the whitefly on the groundnut crop has shifted to soft, due to which the farmers of Mansa, Bathinda, Muktsar Sahib and Fazilka districts have to cut groundnut. It is advised not to cultivate Meanwhile, Bhagwant Mann said that 2500 farmer friends and 100 agricultural experts of PAU will be appointed to make farmers aware of such dangers.
