Mumbai. The Bombay High Court on Tuesday sought to know from the Maharashtra government whether it had sought objections or suggestions before deciding to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad cities in the state.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala and Justice Sandeep Marne also directed the central government to inform whether the state government has submitted any proposal regarding the name change.

The court asked the state government whether the authorities would be able to use the new name in official correspondence without completing the final process of changing the name.

It may be mentioned that the Maharashtra cabinet led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had last year approved the renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad as Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv respectively. Challenging this decision, two public interest litigations were filed in the High Court.

During the hearing on Tuesday, the bench asked the counsel representing the central government, “Has it sought objections.” “We have just received this offer,” said the lawyer. The bench fixed the hearing of the petitions for February 15. (agency)
