The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an alert on Monday saying that fake liver medicine is being sold in the markets of India and Turkey. In its alert, the global organization of the United Nations WHO has warned the people against the alleged fake medicine- Defitelio (Defibrotide).

“This WHO medical product alert is in reference to a counterfeit batch of DEFITELIO (defibrotide sodium),” the WHO alert said. This counterfeit product has been detected in India (April 2023) and Turkey (July 2023) and was supplied outside regular and authorized channels.”

The World Health Organization says this drug is used in hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) therapy to treat severe hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD), also known as sinusoidal obstructive syndrome (SOS). It is also used to treat adults, adolescents, infants and children over one month of age. VOD is a condition in which the veins of the liver become blocked and prevent the organ from functioning properly.

According to the United Nations Health Organization, the original manufacturer of DEFITELIO has confirmed that the product mentioned in the warning is incorrect. WHO also cites the original manufacturer’s version of this drug. The company said genuine DEFITELIO bearing lot 20G20A is packed in German/Austrian packaging, while the fake product has UK/Ireland packaging.

The company also said that the expiry date mentioned on the medicine’s wrapper is also incorrect and does not follow the registered shelf life. Further, the serial number of counterfeit drugs does not belong to batch 20G20A. The company has also said that it does not have the right to market the drug in India and Turkey.

This is not the first time that WHO has issued an alert against the said medicine. Earlier, on 7 May 2020, WHO also said that this fake medicine is being sold in countries like Argentina, Australia, Latvia, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
