What is Anand Marriage Act?
According to Sikh religion, ‘Anand’ ceremony is performed to get married. This ritual was started by the third Guru of Sikhism, Guru Amar Das Ji. Guru Amar Das Ji composed Bani Anandu which is 40 stanzas long. It is sung on all occasions of religious significance and during wedding ceremonies. The Anand Marriage Act has also been recognized by the Punjab government by making a separate law.

Made in 1909, but could not be implemented
The Anand Marriage Act was first enacted in 1909 during the British era. But for some reason this act could not be implemented at that time. In 2007, when the Supreme Court made marriage registration mandatory for all religions, the Sikh community also demanded the implementation of the Anand Marriage Act. Earlier, marriages of people belonging to the Sikh community were registered under the Hindu Marriage Act.

The Anand Marriage Act has been amended many times before. On 7 June 2012, both houses passed the Anand Marriage Amendment Bill 2012, amending the Anand Marriage Act 1909. Registration of Anand will be mandatory for validating Sikh traditional marriages under this Act. Currently, this Anand Marriage Act has been implemented in 11 states of India.
