Freestyle wrestler Aman Shahrawat won India’s first gold medal at the ongoing Asian Wrestling Championship 2023 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Aman Shahrawat, who won gold at the U-23 World Championships in Spain last year, topped the podium in the men’s 57kg freestyle category on the final day of competition. In the final, Aman Shahrawat defeated last year’s bronze medalist Almaz Samanbekov of Kyrgyzstan 9-4 to clinch the gold medal.

After the victory, Aman Shahrawat said, I did not come here to compromise for another ranking but to win the gold medal. I made two mistakes in the final. I watched Almaz’s matches before the final and I thought he relied a lot on counters but I ran to score. I thought to myself that I don’t get tired easily so I kept trying to score.

It was Aman Shahrawat’s second podium finish of the year. He won a bronze medal at the Zagreb Open in January. Aman Shahrawat’s victory in Astana ensured that the gold medal in the men’s freestyle 57 kg category went to India for the fourth year in a row. Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Ravi Kumar Dahiya won gold in this category in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Ravi Dahiya was ruled out of this year’s Asian Championships due to injury and Aman Shahrawat took the Olympic medalist’s place in the Indian contingent after securing his place through a selection trial.
