All 86 accused acquitted in Gujarat’s Naroda case!

Bureau Report: During the Gujarat riots in 2002, 86 accused in the Naroda case have been acquitted by the Sessions Court of Ahmedabad. In the judgment pronounced on Thursday after 21 years of the incident, the court said that there is no evidence against the accused. Shamshad Pathan, the lawyer of the victims, said that we will challenge the decision in the High Court.

On 28 February 2002, riots broke out in Naroda village near Ahmedabad city in which 11 people were killed. In this case, a case was registered against 86 people including former Gujarat government minister and BJP leader Maya Kodnani, Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrang and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Jaideep Patel. 17 people have died in this. The court of Judge SK Bakshi had fixed the date of judgment in this case on April 16. During the trial that started in 2010, both sides heard 187 witnesses and 57 eyewitnesses and in this case that lasted for about 13 years, 6 judges heard the case continuously.

The Naroda incident happened the day after the Godhra incident

The day after the Godhra incident, i.e. 28th February, there was a bandh announcement in Naroda village, meanwhile at 9 am a crowd of people came to close the market, at that time violence broke out. The people involved in the crowd pelted stones, vandalized and set fire, 11 people died while watching. After this riots spread in Paa. Most of the genocide took place here. Killed 97 people. After this, riots spread throughout Gujarat. In this case, the SIT made the then BJP MLA Maya Kodnani the main accused, although she has now been acquitted in the case.

Maya Kodnani acquitted by High Court

The High Court acquitted Maya Kodnani in the 2002 riots case. Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi was sentenced to 21 years in prison. In this case, then BJP President Amit Shah also defended Maya Kodnani. Shah had stated that the police had taken him and Maya to a safe place, as an angry mob had surrounded the hospital.
